Responsibilities
The Indirect Tax Senior will be responsible for preparing or reviewing workpapers that support the organization’s U.S. indirect tax compliance requirements. This role includes reviewing monthly, quarterly, and annual indirect tax calculations, preparing supporting documentation, and conducting tax research to substantiate positions. The Indirect Tax Senior will work closely with the Tax Director and other internal stakeholders to ensure that all transactions are accurately analyzed and properly reflected in U.S. indirect tax filings. In addition, this role includes reviewing sales and use tax returns, coordinating with operational and finance departments to ensure appropriate tax treatment, and maintaining accurate and compliant indirect tax reporting. This position reports directly to the Tax Director.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Responsible for preparation and management of U.S. indirect tax compliance including sales and use tax, excise tax, business license, and property tax filings.
• Prepare or review indirect tax working papers, nexus analyses, and exemption certificate documentation.
• Perform tax research on state and local indirect tax laws, regulations, and rulings to support tax positions and compliance.
• Support indirect tax audits including gathering data, preparing responses, and drafting audit position statements.
• Partner with Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Procurement, and Legal to ensure proper tax determination and documentation.
• Monitor changes in state and local tax laws and communicate impacts to the business.
• Assist with process improvements, system implementations, and automation of indirect tax workflows.
• Manage vendor relationships with external indirect tax advisors and filing service providers.
• Support business operations by providing guidance on taxability of transactions, product classifications, and system tax setups
Education / Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA, CMI, or CMI candidate preferred but not required.
• 4+ years of relevant indirect tax experience with a large U.S. corporation or public accounting firm.
• Strong understanding of U.S. state and local indirect tax concepts including sales/use tax and business licenses.
• Proficiency in indirect tax research and state tax authority resources.
• Ability to manage competing deadlines and multi-state compliance workloads.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Highly organized, detail-oriented, and self-motivated.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including Excel, Outlook, and Teams.
• Experience with indirect tax software (e.g., Avalara, Vertex) preferred but not required.
